Temps are supposed to soar into the high 90’s today, and summer is on its way whether we’re ready for it or not! It’s essential to maintain your car during the heat, as high temps can definitely take a toll on it and its performance. That’s what today’s #WednesdayWisdom is all about – prepping your car for the heat, as well as maintaining it all summer long. Toyota of Orlando has five tips to keep your car cool this summer… so read on!
Beat the heat this summer
Tip #1: Protect the paint. Strong UV rays can seriously fade your paint, so it’s important to protect it. This means applying wax regularly! Our Orlando Toyota car maintenance techs can help you choose the right one for your ride, and you should apply it liberally 3-4 times a year. Also, wash and wax regularly! This will help get dust and debris off of your paint and keep it looking like new. And if you head to the beach, be sure to rinse your ride after. Salt in the air can actually stick to your car and damage the paint.
Tip #2: Shield the interior. It’s important to protect your vehicle on the outside, but it’s just as essential to protect the interior! Tint your windows, for starters – it’ll also make your drive time a lot more pleasant. You should also invest in a sunshade to put up in your windshield – it’ll keep UV rays from hitting your dash and upholstery. One final Orlando Toyota tip? Think about investing in seat covers and a steering wheel cover to keep fabric and leather from fading in the sun.
Tip #3: Keep up with routine car maintenance, especially when it comes to oil and coolant. Your car has to work a lot harder in the summer to keep up with its normal pace because the heat puts higher demands on it. Make sure you stick to an Orlando oil change schedule, and also ensure you keep your coolant tank full of clean coolant. You’ll also want to watch for hoses that get damaged in the heat, as well as keep an eye on your car battery for any swelling, bulging, or leaking.

Tip #4: Park strategically. Think about your parking when the weather is intensely hot outside. You should try to park in the shade to protect your vehicle from the sun, as well as keep it cooler inside. This can prevent fading of the paint and interior. Also, consider cracking your windows (but be aware of the weather forecast if you’re not parking under cover – watch out for rain!) to let excess heat out of your vehicle during the day.
Tip #5: Take care of your tires. High outside temperatures put more stress on your car, and the hot pavement is another factor that can negatively affect performance, even leading to blowouts. Make sure you check your tire pressure regularly (first thing in the morning when it’s cooler outside is best), and keep an eye on your tires to look for bulges, blisters, and other damage that can lead to weakness.
