Have you set New Year’s resolutions for 2017? A lot of people do – 41% of Americans usually make them at the end of the year, but sadly, only about 8% of them actually KEEP them. Our Orlando Toyota dealership wants to help you be a part of that 8%. That’s why we’ve taken the time to come up with some tips to help you see your resolution through and make 2017 your best year yet. Let’s get started!
Tip #1: Be realistic. Some resolutions take time to achieve, so don’t expect to see immediate results. Whether it’s weight loss or kicking a bad habit, it won’t happen right away. What matters is that you work toward it so that by the end of the year, you’ve achieved your goal. Setting unrealistic goals almost ensures that you won’t reach them because you’ll get discouraged.
Tip #2: Consider your sub-strategies. After all, it usually takes multiple steps to achieve goals. Take weight loss, for example – you have to do multiple things to make it happen. You have to clean up your diet, exercise, drink more water, change how you order at restaurants… it’s not quite as simple as it seems at face value. Make sure you consider all the steps and plot them out accordingly; it’ll make reaching your goal that much easier if you tackle one at a time.
Tip #3: Don’t give yourself ultimatums! It’s unrealistic and it makes it more likely that you’ll give up your resolution. For example, instead of cutting up all of your credit cards to stop using them, cut back the number you have and how much you put on them at first. Make a plan to only put certain expenses on two cards, and then cut back over time until voila! You’re not using them at all anymore. (Then you can cut them up.) Don’t be too hard on yourself all at once!
Tip #4: Be proud of yourself. Instead of getting down on yourself because you’re not achieving your resolution as quickly as you want to, remind yourself of how great you are and all of your other accomplishments. It can be things as small as the fact that you made it to work on time every day that week, or you didn’t buy coffee on Friday and saved $4 by making it at home. The more you boost yourself up, the more confident you feel in your own willpower.
Tip #5: Give yourself visual reminders. Trying to save up money to take a trip to Australia? Why not print out a picture of Bondi Beach and hang it on the fridge? Visual cues can remind you WHY you’re working toward a certain resolution and give you a second wind when it comes to willpower.
From our Orlando Toyota family to yours, happy new year – and best of luck on your resolutions!
