Have you noticed a suspicious looking spot on your ride that may be rust? If so, you need to stop it in its tracks. Rust can be extremely harmful to your vehicle in terms of both performance AND appearance, and can lead to expensive repairs down the road. (Not to mention, it looks terrible!) Toyota of Orlando’s body shop has taken the time to come up with some tips to help you prevent it from ever even starting on your car, so take a look!
Take steps to prevent rust altogether
1) Wash your car. Washing your car helps keep your paint in good condition because you’re removing the dirt and debris from everyday driving that can damage it. Wash your car once every two weeks or so, and be sure to wash EVERYWHERE (not just the paint). Wash the undercarriage, wheel wells, and under the bumpers of your car to remove dirt and ensure rust doesn’t have a chance.
2) Wax your car. Our Orlando body shop highly recommends waxing your car on a regular basis – once every four months is perfect, but even twice a year will help prevent rust from forming on your car. Wax protects your paint and also helps repel moisture from your vehicle, so the conditions for rusting won’t be right and you won’t have to worry about it. Find a good wax and put some elbow grease into it!
3) Stay on top of your paint job. Your paint – both the paint itself and the clear coat over it – help prevent rust by forming a barrier between your car and the exterior world… primarily, moisture. Make sure your paint job is in good condition and if you notice chipping or damage to the clear coat, bring it into our Orlando auto body shop to let our techs either touch it up, give you a new clear coat, or give you a new car paint job altogether.
Don’t try to tackle this problem on your own right away
3) If you see a spot of rust, immediately take care of it. It spreads fast – faster than you think – and you don’t want to give it the chance to become a big and expensive problem. You can try to take care of it at home, but we recommend bringing your car into our Orlando Toyota Collision Center to let our techs look at it and repair it as necessary. Remember, if the damage is superficial and only on the surface it can probably be ground off, but if it’s eaten through any of the metal on your car you’ll most likely have to replace the panel for safety reasons. It’s not necessarily a DIY repair, so let Toyota of Orlando take a look at it before you decide your course of action.
