It’s that time again! Back-to-school is upon us, and you’ll now be driving them to and fro in the mornings and afternoons during the week. If you have graciously volunteered yourself for carpooling this semester (maybe as part of your New Year’s resolutions?), your friends at Toyota of Orlando have carpool tips to get you and the little ones settled into a successful routine! Let’s get started.
Safety Tips for Carpooling with Kids:
1. DO have a detailed game plan beforehand.
Meet up with your fellow carpooling parents to discuss your needs, set up a schedule, and develop a game plan early. Toyota of Orlando recommends each parent has a printed schedule on hand! Also important, make sure that everyone involved in the carpool programs each person’s cell phone and emergency numbers into their phones. A pro tip is to group your contacts under “Carpool” or start a group text/chat on your smartphone.
2. DON’T forget to secure the kids before you drive.
This is a no-brainer, but we like to reiterate since driving with children around Orlando can get a little hectic. Make it a rule never to take off before doing a roll call and ensuring everyone is properly strapped in. And before you even pick up the first child for the carpool, make sure you have equipped your car with the proper safety seats. Be sure to check the state laws since many changes have occurred in recent years to booster and car seat regulations!
3. DO pack extra necessities and have them on hand.
Depending on the age range of the kids you are carpooling, anything from extra snacks and toys to baby wipes and diapers may be good to have on deck. Also, make sure you periodically check in with each parent about any medical and safety needs their children might have. If you are carpooling in Orlando with a child that has allergies, make sure you are carrying the proper medications and know how to use them in the case of an emergency. You know what they say: prepare for the worst and hope for the best!
4. DON’T forget you set the example of safety.
As the parent in charge, it is your responsibility to be a role model of safe behavior for the little ones. Your little backseat riders are tuning in on you while you drive to and from school, so make sure you’re practicing safe driving in Orlando at all times. That means:
- Absolutely no texting and driving
- Inserting the addresses in your GPS before taking off
- Keeping both eyes on the road
