As Floridians, we rarely get the chance to drive on icy roads. But if you happen to be taking a trip to a winter wonderland this holiday, there are a few things you should know about driving on ice and snow. Luckily, your friends at Toyota of Orlando have safe driving tips to help get you through the treacherous ice roads and to your destination. Let’s get started!
Practice safe driving on icy roads with these tips:
Tip #1 – Slow down significantly.
This one may sound like a given, but many think that going the speed limit is slow enough when tackling ice roads. Not true! Our Orlando Toyota auto service team recommends you stay at 35-40 mph maximum when driving on a straight interstate, and even slower when there are curves and merging traffic zones.
Tip #2 – Look out for sand on the road.
Cities tend to work to clear snow and ice from the roads, and they do this by spilling salt (to reduce the ice by lowering the freezing point of water) and sand (to improve traction and help prevent new ice from forming) on the road. If you find sand on the road, drive through it as it will help you stay safe on the road!
Tip #3 – Don’t panic if you spin or slide.
It’s important not to freak out if you skid, and it’s even more important to know how to correct it. If your front tires skid, one of our Orlando Toyota driving safety tips is that you let go of the accelerator smoothly and allow the car to slow down without turning the steering wheel.
Tip #4 – Take on hills differently.
Your success driving on icy hills will rely heavily on how you begin at the bottom of the hill. Instead of powering up the hill, get some inertia going early and let that carry to the top. Once you get there, proceed as slowly as you can downwards.
Tip #5 – Don’t use cruise control.
While it may seem convenient to use cruise control, especially when you are taking a road trip out of Orlando, it can be very dangerous on ice and snow. In fact, you could lose control of your vehicle — and when snow and ice come into play, you want as much control over your vehicle as you can! Don’t leave it to your car — sometimes it’s up to you to keep yourself and your fellow travelers safe!
Tip #6 – If it can wait, let it.
Sometimes it’s best to just say no to icy roads. It will always be a better option to postpone your trip when the roads are slippery, especially if you are experiencing severe weather like winter storms. So, if it’s not pressing, wait it off, and head out when the roads are safe.
