Heading off to college is starting a whole new chapter of your life. You’ll encounter a lot of firsts, and have to take on a lot of new responsibilities that you may not have had to deal with at home! It can definitely be overwhelming, to say the least. One of those responsibilities includes taking care of and maintaining your car, and our Orlando Toyota Service Center is here to help. We’ve got an auto service guide for students to help you ensure that your car maintenance is routine AND affordable!
Toyota of Orlando wants to help you maintain your car on your own
Let’s talk basics – we’ll give you the main categories you should keep an eye on when you’re caring for your own car. Use these tips from our Toyota service techs in Orlando!
Dashboard lights: It can be pretty scary to see your dashboard lights come on, especially because that usually indicates that something is wrong. One of the most common dash lights we see at our Orlando auto service center is the check engine light; it can mean a variety of things and usually warrants a visit to see one of our techs. However, be sure to check your gas cap… sometimes if it’s not twisted on tight enough it can make the light go on! You should also keep your eyes open for your tire pressure light – it’ll let you know if your tire pressure is too low and you need to increase the PSI.
Engine: You’ll also want to schedule routine maintenance for your engine, with the big one being an Orlando oil change. Oil keeps your engine cool and lubricated, so if you run out or it gets too dirty, it won’t be able to do its job (and your car can quickly overheat). You should routinely check your oil by pulling out the oil dipstick (after the engine has cooled off!) and checking to make sure that the color is tan or caramel hued, and that the level falls in between the two tick marks. Also keep an eye on your oil light in your dash – if it lights up, then you’re due for an oil change appointment. It looks like an oil can with a drop of oil coming from it. (And our service techs can also shoot you helpful reminders!)

Tires: It’s important to keep track of your tires, as they’re what provides you with traction to grip the road AND they affect your fuel efficiency (and in turn, your wallet). Our auto service center in Orlando recommends watching out for that tire pressure light and also conducting routine physical inspections of your tires. You should be on the lookout for damage (like nails), bulging or blisters, or spots where the tread is wearing bare. Also, be sure to schedule routine Orlando tire rotations for your ride, as well as replace tires as recommended by our car service techs!
