The weather has gotten pretty chilly here in Central Florida this week! We’ve dipped into the 40’s, which means winter (yeah, we know, we’re wimps) is upon us. Winter weather can have an effect on your car, and we’re here with our Orlando Toyota Service techs to talk some of the most common cold weather car myths. Learn how to best care for your ride when the weather outside is frightful – our Toyota service techs are here to help!
Let’s decide if cold weather car myths are actually myths with the help of our Toyota Service techs!
Cold weather car myth #1: You need to start your car on your lunch break to ensure it’ll start again after work when the weather is cold. So, so untrue! If you’re having issues with getting your car started after 8 hours of sitting in the parking lot, it’s not the cold weather – you more likely have an issue with your spark plugs or something else under the hood. Let our Orlando Toyota Service techs take a peek to see what’s going on so you have a more reliable ride!
Cold weather car myth #2: You should carry sandbags or cat litter in your trunk for better traction. This is actually true! Our Toyota Service Center in Orlando recommends doing this if you’re going to be driving in snow or ice. The extra weight in the back will make your ride less likely to slide out on slick surfaces, so you’ll be safer when you hit the road. (On a side note, cat litter is also a great way to get unstuck from a slick spot – it’ll help your wheels grip so you’re not spinning out!)
Cold weather car myth #3: You need to idle your car for a while before driving in cold weather. False! Our Orlando Toyota service reps don’t recommend this; idling actually eats away at your fuel efficiency and if your car is up to date on routine car maintenance and in good shape, then you shouldn’t need to idle to get it prepared to hit the road. Plus, driving warms the car up faster than idling anyway. If you’re concerned about a cold cabin, hit the road to warm things up!
Toyota of Orlando can help you take on cold weather like a champ!
Cold weather car myth #4: You need to swap out your car’s fluids if you’re heading into extreme cold weather. This actually isn’t a myth at all – it’s quite true! You’ll need fluids that can handle temperature extremes, especially when it comes to coolant and oil. This will help your car perform better in the cold and keep your drive time safe and is highly recommended by our Toyota service techs in Orlando. Additionally, make sure you invest in windshield wiper fluid won’t freeze when you hit it – we know from personal experience. (And yes, we’re embarrassed about it.)
