Have you ever heard of Camp Boggy Creek? This local non-profit camp is geared towards providing a summer camp experience for children with serious and terminal illnesses, and our Orlando Toyota dealership couldn’t be happier to support them in their efforts! We’ve teamed up with them to co-sponsor the 5th Annual Camp Boggy Creek Challenge Ride this weekend, and we’re here to tell you how YOU can with with our new Toyota dealership in Orlando and make a difference!
Why is Camp Boggy Creek so important to Central Florida?
Camp Boggy Creek is located in Eustis, FL on a property that stretches over 150 acres. Like we said, this camp is a camp for children with serious and terminal illnesses – these kids are unable to attend regular summer camps because of their conditions. They need access to medical attention around the clock in case of emergency, and they also need someone to supervise their medication to ensure they get it safely and in a timely manner. Camp Boggy Creek provides all of this to the campers and more – it also provides them with a safe haven where they can be normal. They’re around other kids with the same types of conditions, so for once they don’t feel singled out because of their illness. Camp Boggy Creek also provides a haven for parents and family with their family weekends, where families can come together and find solidarity in one another!
Obviously, Camp Boggy Creek is an essential part of our community, but they’re a non-profit – they exist solely on the generosity of others. That’s why it’s so important to support them, and here at Toyota of Orlando we take it very seriously! We regularly hold drives to raise money for camp supplies, and we also are a co-sponsor of this year’s Challenge Ride. The 5th Annual Camp Boggy Creek Challenge Ride helps raise funds to keep the camp’s doors open; riders can take on a 40 or 60 mile course and each team has a “team champion” – one of the campers from Boggy!
Meet Evie, the Toyota of Orlando Team Champion!
Our team champion this year is Evie. Evie is six, and she has cancer. She was diagnosed just before her third birthday, and has had numerous medical treatments since then, including chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, and brain surgery. These treatments left her unable to walk for a year and unable to speak for four months. She recently turned six and another tumor has been discovered; she has undergone a full radiation treatment for it and is still fighting strong. Evie is a regular camper at Boggy, and her family is extremely grateful for the fact that she can come to camp and find freedom from her illness.
Here at Toyota of Orlando, we are dedicated to continuing to support Camp Boggy Creek as much as we possibly can to help campers like Evie. If you’d like to ride in the 5th Annual Challenge Ride, you can sign up online – it takes place on September 12th at Camp Boggy Creek. If you’d like to help in other ways, the camp can always use monetary donations, or you can donate supplies – they keep a list on their website of the most currently needed supplies. You can also volunteer at camp to lend a hand!
