Who remembers the Toyota MR2 Spyder?
We definitely do – this popular Orlando Toyota sports car had its heyday for a solid five years – it was introduced into the market back in 2000, and had a strong run until 2005! Drivers couldn’t get enough of it, and with good reason. It shared a lot of similarities with the new Orlando Scion FR-S, in fact! It was affordable, performance-driven, and super-sporty. It was also available in just one trim-level, exactly like the latest Scion sports car is! Let’s take a closer look at the Toyota MR2 Spyder’s history for Flashback Friday!
Get to know the Toyota MR2 Spyder!
Toyota MR2 stands for mid-engine, rear-drive, 2-seat sports car (kind of like how the Orlando Scion FR-S stands for front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car). The Spyder part was added on (the original Toyota MR2 actually came out in 1976) to indicate that this popular Orlando Toyota sports car was a convertible! This sporty roadster sat low to the ground and features stylish elements like sweeping lines, flashy trim, alloy wheels, and a compact size to take the driving experience to a whole new level (and turn a whole lot of heads). However, the thing that drivers REALLY liked about the Toyota MR2 Spyder was its performance!
This Orlando Toyota sports cars was designed to be maneuverable and quick – it had a low curb weight, and a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine that produced 138 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque (which is a good deal for such a small, light car). It also featured elements like:
- A five-speed manual transmission with sequential shifting capabilities, after 2003, it was available in six speeds!
- A chassis that mimics that of a race car for incredible maneuverability and handling
- A fully independent suspension and power steering
And more. Drivers could also enjoy an AM/FM radio and CD player inside the cabin, as well as air conditioning and power door locks, windows, and mirrors. Plus, a glass rear window could be rolled down to let the outside in if you didn’t feel like putting the top down!

We miss the Toyota MR2 Spyder, and we hope another sports car similar to it will be hitting the market soon. However, we’ve got something pretty similar in the Orlando Scion FR-S! This new Scion sports car offers you a roomier interior than its predecessor with seating for five and an impressive trunk space for cargo, but it still takes performance to a new level. You’ll get 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque when you hit the road, and you’ll be able to choose between automatic (with paddle shifters) and manual transmissions! Plus, it’s affordable – it has a starting MSRP of just $25,670!
