Daylight savings time is here! Have you noticed how much darker it is when you leave work at night? We have at our Orlando Toyota dealership – it’s a big adjustment from the summertime! However, just because you may be heading home from work in your 2015 Toyota Prius in the dark doesn’t mean you have to be unsafe. We’ve got tons of tips for tackling the darkness when you’re behind the wheel! Take a look at some of our tips for driving safely at night and hit the highway with confidence this winter!
Navigate your new Toyota Prius with confidence at night!
The first thing to remember when you take your Orlando Toyota Prius out on the road in the dark is to turn on your headlights. It’s easy to forget, especially when you’re in that weird twilight hour where it’s not quite dark and not quite light out. While some of our new Toyota hybrids offer automatic headlight settings, if you choose not to use them then be aware of when you should turn on your headlights – legally, they should be on at dawn and dusk. This allows you a better field of visibility and also lets other drivers see you better!
However, don’t turn on your highbeams unless absolutely necessary when navigating your 2015 Toyota Prius in Orlando through the dark. Your highbeams should only be used in extremely dark and unlit situations where there are not other drivers around you – you can easily blind an oncoming driver with your brights, which causes an automatic safety hazard! If you find yourself facing down a driver who has their highbeams on, slow down and look at the right side of the road; use the line to carefully guide yourself past them until you can see again.
Focus! You definitely need to keep your attention on the road – things are harder to see and anticipate in the dark, so you’ll have to have your defensive driving skills turned on. Put down your phone or iPod and keep your eyes on the road in front of your new Toyota Prius in Orlando. You should also leave more distance in between yourself and other drivers in case you need to slow or come to a stop quickly!
Practice defensive driving in your Orlando Toyota!
Never drive tired. Driving tired is akin to driving intoxicated, so if you’re sleepy call it a night and check into a motel to start fresh in the morning. You should also never get behind the wheel of your new Toyota Prius when you’re intoxicated. If you’ve had even one drink, you need to call a cab or find a designated driver. Alcohol dulls your senses and slows your reaction time, making you a danger to both yourself and others on the road!
