Summer is coming, friends! We’re already in the month of April and everyone knows that summer basically starts in May here in Central Florida. However, did you know that summer is one of the most dangerous seasons to drive in here in our city? Russ Rader, a spokesperson for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently reported that this particular time of the year can be the deadliest when it comes to hitting the road. Are you and your new Toyota in Orlando prepped and ready?
It’s easy to integrate safe driving habits into your summer; our Orlando Toyota dealership has plenty of tips to get you started, and we also have a great selection of new Toyota that come with the latest and greatest safety technology. However, as wonderful as all that safety technology is, you have to have the knowledge to be able to implement it during your drive time and make sure you’re practicing safe driving habits. Summer can be dangerous – the kids are out of school, there are more tourists on the road, and we get our typical rainy afternoon weather. Here are some of our top tips!
- Be aware of your surroundings on the highway! Central Florida is a prime tourist spot, and that means you’ll be surrounded by a lot of drivers who aren’t quite sure where they’re going. Be sure to handle your new Toyota in Orlando accordingly – use your blinkers to indicate your movements, leave plenty of room for changing lanes, and be sure to stop with enough space to avoid an accident. You should also abide by speed limits and other rules of the road when you’re commandeering your new Toyota!
- Be careful when in suburban or urban areas. More tourists and more summer celebrations means more pedestrians and people on bicycles and scooters, so pay attention when crossing intersections and look out for people who are jaywalking. You should drive slowly in urban areas and be sure to use your headlights as needed (during rainy weather and at dusk/night), and check twice before crossing an intersection to ensure no pedestrians are around.
- Pay attention to the weather! Everyone knows we get our fair share of afternoon thunderstorms in Central Florida during the summer, so you should drive accordingly. Slow and steady wins the race in these types of conditions, and you should also make sure that you new Toyota is in the right shape to take on slippery roads – this means your tires, brakes, wipers, and headlights are all in excellent condition.
- Also be sure to drive carefully during summer holidays, such as Labor Day, Memorial Day, and 4th of July. Lots of people will be out on the road at these times, and alcohol is usually involved in the holiday celebrations!
