We know all to well at our Orlando Toyota dealership that the new Toyota Prius is the best-selling hybrid in the world for a good reason. It’s eco-friendly, extremely fuel-efficient, and packing both style and technology in its aerodynamic hatchback shape. It’s definitely led the pack when it comes to hybrid cars, and we don’t see that changing anytime soon. However, we didn’t realize just how versatile the Orlando Toyota Prius truly is until we heard about how a Canadian man used it to power his home after an ice storm!
Orlando Toyota Prius has enough power to get a furnace going
Ice storms rained down on Toronto the week before Christmas, and hundreds of thousands of people were left without power (which is especially problematic with freezing temps). However, one creative homeowner decided to put his new Toyota hybrid to good use when the power went out – he actually used it to heat his home! Bob Omselak, a Toronto resident, utilized the battery of his new Toyota Prius to both heat his house and keep his TV and lights on. He’s an aircraft mechanic, so he knew how to run a cable from the battery of the Toyota hybrid to inside the house and hook it up to an interior outlet.
Omselak used his Toyota Prius battery to run different things in shifts! First he would turn on the furnace to heat the house to a comfortable temperature, and when that was accomplished he’d turn off the furnace and use the battery to power his lights, fridge, and television for a while, switching back when the interior temps of the house dropped!
Talk about ingenuity! We were pretty impressed by the abilities of the Toyota Prius in Orlando before, and even more so now! However, keep in mind that Omselak had previous engineering and mechanic experience under his belt, so you shouldn’t try to replicate his use of the car’s battery on your own!
What makes this new Toyota hybrid in Orlando winter-worthy?
What else makes this Orlando Toyota hybrid great for cold weather driving situations? Here are some of our favorite winter-ready features!
- It’s front-wheel drive, which means better traction in slippery situations since the heavy engine is located over the front wheels. This means better steering capabilities and less chance of skidding out and losing control.
- Safety features like the Pre-Collision System, a Head-Up Display so you can keep your eyes on the road, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, and Safety Connect Services (including Roadside Assistance and Automatic Collision Notification).
- Heated SofTex seats and automatic climate control to ensure all passengers stay comfortable no matter how frigid it gets outside
- A display audio system that has major connectivity and navigation – this means you can check the weather and traffic reports before you pull out of the garage, and easily find alternate routes to get to where you need to be!
