Toyota is a big advocate of safety behind the wheel – they do a ton of safety technology research at their Ann Arbor facilities, and they’re constantly participating in initiatives to get people to put down their cell phones when they’re in the driver’s seat. If you remember, our Orlando Toyota dealership reported on one of their latest safety initiatives called “Arrive in Style”. They teamed up with Teen Vogue to encourage teen drivers AND their parents to stop driving while distracted, especially in the case of cell phones!
Toyota finds alarming rates of distracted driving in teens
Most recently, however, Toyota has delved into more safety research regarding teens and texting. At Toyota of Orlando, we shake our fingers at drivers who text while behind the wheel of their new Toyota – it’s incredibly dangerous to both you and the drivers around you on the road. Toyota’s research backs us up! They conducted the study in Texas, and found that 27% of teens there regularly check their phone while driving (and 30% of teens also do this on a nationwide basis). Even more frightening, 24% of teens will respond to a text while driving and 22% will carry on a long conversation over text messaging when they’re behind the wheel!
That wasn’t all that Toyota found in their research. They also discovered that:
- About 10% of teens admit to browsing social media while driving, from checking their Facebook to tweeting
- Teens are also looking for their favorite tunes pretty frequently when they’re driving – 55% admitted to scrolling through their iPods
- 67% of teens admitted that they use a cell phone regularly when they’re out on the roads, and 83% of parents also engage in the behavior. (Come on parents, lead by example!)
- 62% of teens say they drive with 2-3 other teens and 0 adults in the car – according to AAA, this doubles their risk of being killed in a crash. 35% of teens said they ride around with 3+ teens and 0 adults in the car, which quadruples the risk.
Scary findings, aren’t they? However, you can take a proactive stand against driving distracted. As a parent, it’s your job to set an example… so put your cell phone down! If you absolutely must take a phone call when behind the wheel, we have new Toyota in Orlando that boast technology to help make it as safe as possible. You can utilize the Bluetooth technology found in so many of our new Toyota to keep things hands free – a lot of our vehicles even have Bluetooth controls mounted right on the steering wheel so you never have to take your hands off of it! NEVER text behind the wheel (besides, it’s illegal in Central Florida now anyway).
How can you help your teen stay safe behind the wheel of a new Toyota in Orlando?
Also, set ground rules with your teen drivers. Make sure if they have other teens in the car, there’s also an adult present, and set curfews as to how late they can be on the roads. You should also teach them basics like how to handle bad weather when behind the wheel, how to react when they get pulled over (it will happen, might as well prepare them), how to handle a breakdown, etc..
Teen drivers, step up to the plate! Driving is a big responsibility, so make sure that you behavior indicates that you understand that when you’re behind the wheel of your new Toyota. Put your cell phone in the glovebox and keep your eyes on the road… and never drive distracted!
