Did you know that this week – 45 years ago – the Toyota Corolla made its way to the US for the first time ever? This best-selling compact sedan was introduced to the US market in 1968, and it’s been going strong ever since then. If you had purchased the Toyota Corolla in Orlando at that time, you would have paid less than $1,700 for the economy vehicle! Let’s take a look at how it’s progressed since its initial introduction into the US market, and how it became one of the best-selling compact cars on the planet!
The 1968 Toyota Corolla
When Toyota decided to introduce the new Toyota Corolla in Orlando for the first time, they based the vehicle around affordability, economy, and simplicity. It was quite different than the new Toyota models you can test-drive on our lot today – it only had 60 horsepower and no automatic transmission option, and it also was available in three different body styles. You could choose between a two-door wagon, two-door coupe, or a two-door sedan (unlike the 2013 Toyota Corolla, which is available in a four-door sedan only right now).
However, Toyota is known for being innovative, and that quality was certainly reflected in the evolution of this Toyota over the years! Here are some of the changes that have taken place since the original introduction of this incredible car.
- New generations were consistently introduced to refresh the design, performance, and functionality of the car. The Fourth Generation was a notable achievement – it was introduced in 1979 and offered elements like a sleeker exterior, a four- or five-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission, and a new engine that was 1.6L and provided 75 horsepower.
- In 1982, this Toyota received a boost in terms of transmission – the automatic model was now four-speeds.
- The 1990’s brought even more changes to the Orlando Toyota Corolla. Drivers were now privy to an Anti-Lock Brake System, as well as added torque and an overall smoother ride. Around this time the car was also re-classified as a compact car instead of a sub-compact.
What’s new on this Orlando Toyota?

It additionally received an IntelliChoice Retained Value award, and 80% of all Toyota Corolla models sold in the past 20 years are still rocking the streets!
