We’ve been looking forward to the Long Beach Grand Prix for quite some time now, mostly because we were incredibly excited to see how the 2013 Scion FR-S in Orlando fared in the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race. The race finally took place this weekend, and Rutledge Wood took first place! He beat over a dozen other drivers and was extremely excited by his win.Wood was thrilled to win the race and be a part of such an amazing cause – this race raises money for children’s hospitals here in the US. Let’s take a closer look at just how the race went down, and how the new Scion race car handled the course!
Wood races the 2013 Scion FR-S to the win!
Wood – who’s a star on Top Gear – may have won the race, but he had some close competition. He led the pack from the get-go apparently, but fell behind a bit and was overtaken by Mark Steines and Michael Trucco. They couldn’t hold the lead, however – Wood soon surged ahead again and won the race, which consists of ten laps around the course. There was another tense moment near the end when Brett Davern looked like he might edge ahead, but he was unsuccessful and Wood stole the wining spot!
The Orlando Scion FR-S was the real star of the show in our opinions. Toyota took this affordable sports car and amped it up, giving it extra horsepower and better handling capabilities. Subsequently, there were no major collisions during the entire course and Davern even managed to complete the quickest lap by a celebrity, finishing a round in 1:44.188. The best overall lap was handed over to pro driver Tyler Clary – he beat Davern by a miniscule amount with a time of 1:44.128. Racers Andy Bell and Jessica Hardy nicked the wall in their Scion race cars, but drove away with minor dents.
Some highlights included:
- Racer Dakota Meyer pulled off an impressive finish – even though he wasn’t in first, he tore across the finish line in a donut, thrilling onlookers! His 2013 Scion FR-S race car handled it like a dream and helped him to take fourth place overall.
- This particular Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race was the fastest race yet out of all 37 years (we think it MIGHT have had something to do with the car they were using – just saying.).
- The top five racers included Rutledge Wood, Davern Meyer, Michael Trucco, Dakota Meyer, and Mark Steines.
