Is an open-top Scion FR-S in Orlando on the agenda?

new Scion FR-S in Orlando

At our Orlando Toyota dealership, we absolutely cannot get enough of the iconic 2013 Scion FR-S. This affordable sports car – yup, we used those three words together – brings aggressive style and an impressive performance to the table at a price that won’t break the bank account. Imagine our excitement level when we found out that a convertible version of this phenomenal car might be headed our way in the future! The 2013 Scion FR-S in Orlando is known as the Toyota GT-86 in Europe and other countries, where it’s just as popular of a ride. It was recently announced that the FT-86 - an open-top version of the GT-86 – would be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, which is going on right now!

New Scion FR-S in Orlando may offer a convertible option

new GT-86 convertibleAlthough the FT-86 has been deemed a concept car, those who have gotten a sneak peek at it have deemed it production-ready; in other words, it’s ready for a spot in your driveway after a few small tweaks or adjustments. Toyota is insisting that they need to test things further to ensure that by removing the hard top and replacing it with a convertible soft top, the performance of the car won’t be affected (since that’s an extremely important factor in the car’s success). However, we’re willing to bet that when they see the excitement and fervor generated over the car – which is incredibly reminiscent of the Toyota 2000GT – it’ll give them the nudge they need to work faster!

What do we know about the possible open-top version of the Orlando Scion FR-S? Let’s take a look at what’s been leaked so far:

  • It’ll operate on the same powertrain as the 2013 Scion FR-S. This means you’ll get the same 4-cylinder Boxer engine that’s flat to allow a lower center of gravity and better maneuvering. You’ll also enjoy the rear-wheel drive aspect for extra oomph during acceleration.
  • You’ll get the same sleek exterior look, which will be differentiated by a soft-top that folds down into the trunk. However, Toyota has been careful not to take away from trunk space too much so you’ll still have a good amount of cargo room back there.
  • The soft-top room will be fabric with multiple layers to help keep out the elements, like the famous summer thunderstorms we often face in Central Florida. This top will also feature a glass rear window.
  • The same seating capabilities on the interior – two in the front, two in the back.

That’s all we know about this incredible new Scion at the moment, but we’re sure we’ll hear more details as the Geneva Motor Show continues this week! We know that Toyota is also concerned about curb weight, which can have an effect on performance – they want to maintain the 50/50 weight balance for which this new Scion in Orlando is renowned!
