Alright, alright – we know, we don’t get much TRUE winter weather in Central Florida. Toyota of Orlando is all about being proactive, however, so we want to prepare you should the occasion ever arise! We’re in the midst of the holiday season, and this means some of our customers might be heading to colder climes to visit family or take holiday vacations. Why not prep yourself and your new Toyota in Orlando before you hit the road and avoid any unpleasant surprises along the way? Toyota of Orlando has tips on how you can safely drive in winter weather!
Prep your new Toyota in Orlando accordingly for snow and ice!
Preparation is everything – that’s a motto our Orlando Toyota dealership will stand by! Before you leave for your winter vacation, make sure that your new Toyota is properly prepared. You’ll want to get all routine maintenance taken care of – oil changes, battery checks, etc. (we can help you with this at our Toyota Service Center in Orlando). Additionally, ensure that you have the right tires on your car! If you’re going to be heading into heavy snow, you’ll need special tires to be able to safely navigate the weather. Even if you’re just heading into slushy territory, you need to make sure that your new Toyota in Orlando is decked out with tires that have enough tread on them to give you traction. Don’t forget your winter preparedness kit, too – you never know when you might have an unexpected breakdown. Stock your new Toyota with things like jumper cables, a shovel, kitty litter (to help provide traction), extra blankets, and some snacks and water. Don’t forget to plot your route carefully, check the weather, and allow extra time if things look like they’re going to get messy!
Onto the driving part! Navigate your new Toyota in Orlando carefully when you hit winter weather. Now is not the time to speed or follow too closely, and you’ll also want to make sure you leave enough distance between your new Toyota and other drivers. Always leave more than enough room to stop your new Toyota (about three times more space than usual). Even if you’re following the rules of the road, it’s easy for others to lose control and slide into you! Speaking of sliding, try to avoid losing control of your car by using smooth driving techniques… don’t slam on the gas or brake, don’t weave in and out of traffic, and don’t make sharp turns. If you feel yourself starting to slide, take your foot off of the accelerator! You want to try and steer into the skid, or steer in the direction that you want your front wheels to go.

A few more tips – NEVER use your new Toyota’s cruise control in snow or ice, and always make sure your headlights are on to alert other drivers of your presence! You should also use your windshield wipers to help keep your visibility up. Watch your step on bridges, as they tend to freeze over first and can be extra icy. Additionally, you should never pass sand or plow trucks in your new Toyota as the road ahead of them will have less traction than the road behind them! Finally, don’t get too confident, even if you have four-wheel drive. It won’t help you out of a sticky situation if you lose control of your vehicle!
