At Toyota of Orlando, we know how stressful car issues can be! Getting stuck on the side of the road in Central Florida, waiting for an auto repair guy can be extremely time-consuming and costly. We take great pride in providing our Orlando Toyota customers with a brand new service center at our Toyota dealership in Central Florida, and our trained Toyota technicians love providing our customers with useful tips! This week, we’re providing you with tips on how to handle a dreaded but common situation: the flat tire. It’s happened to all of us – you accidentally run over a nail in your new Toyota in Orlando, or hit a curb too sharply. The causes abound, so Toyota of Orlando has the information you need to safely and efficiently address the situation if it happens to you!
First of all, try to pull over to the side of the road and out of traffic if the tire allows. When you feel the blowout occur, grip your steering wheel tight and take your foot off of the gas, but DO NOT slam on the brakes! This can cause you to lose control of your new Toyota in Orlando. You’ll want to try and steer into a breakdown lane or, if possible, an exit where you can safely deal with the flat. Make sure you use your blinkers if you’re cutting across lanes so you let other drivers know what you’re doing!
Once you’ve come to a stop, turn on your flashers to indicate to other drivers in Orlando. Again, ensure that you’re far enough out of the way of traffic to avoid injury! Note: you don’t want to park on a soft shoulder, as trying to jack up your car on a soft or uneven surface can be VERY dangerous. Next, assess the situation. Are you in a tight spot, close to the traffic going by? Does it seem like it’ll be a harried situation if you try to change the tire yourself? If this is the case, then you’ll want to contact a professional to help you – changing a tire on your new Orlando Toyota is challenging enough without cars racing by! You should also raise your hood to let police officers, etc. know that you may need assistance.
If you think you can manage changing the tire yourself, get out your supplies – you’ll need the spare (make sure you’re always driving around with a fully-inflated spare tire), a jack, and a tire iron. Make sure your Orlando Toyota is in park and the emergency brake is applied! Next, go ahead and remove the hubcap so you can access the lugnuts on the tire. Loosen the lug nuts with the end of your tire iron (or a wrench) – if one seems stuck, pull your tire iron UP rather than pushing it down – this will help prevent back injury. Once the lugnuts are loose, it’s time to jack your car up!
Jack the car up so you have enough room to remove the tire. You’ll want to remove the lugnuts – stick them in your pocket so you don’t lose them! Pull off the tire and place it out of the way; next, you’ll want to put the spare on and tighten the lugnuts (clockwise!). Make sure they’re all firmly affixed and then lower the car using the jack. Put all your supplies – including the flat tire – in your trunk, and you’re good to go! Remember, you shouldn’t drive at high speeds or for long distances on a spare – you need to go to your local auto repair shop in Orlando to get a new tire!
