Our Toyota dealership in Central Florida wants you to have as safe of a driving experience as possible (part of the reason why we’re so proud to offer Orlando Toyota vehicles – Toyota is renowned for their safety research) – and preparation is half the battle. That’s why we’re happy to share information with our valued Toyota customers in Central Florida – this week, we’d like to share tips on what to do after an accident! Accidents happen, despite how carefully you may be driving. After the accident can be a very confusing, frightening, and hectic time – take note of our helpful list, and be prepared should the worst happen!
Steps to Take After an Accident
First, assess the situation. Are you or any of your passengers seriously hurt? Call for emergency assistance if you think there’s a chance of injury, and call the police to make a report. Also, move your vehicle off to the side of the road if possible to avoid being hit again by other passing cars – however, you should only try to move if no one is seriously injured. Moving an injured person can seriously aggravate the problem. Remember to turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers, and if you have cones or warning triangles in your trunk, put them to good use!
Second, exchange information. Make sure you talk to the other driver and exchange information such as:
- Name, address, phone number, and email
- Insurance company, policy number, and contact information
- Driver license number and license plate number
- Written descriptions of both vehicles (make, model, year, color, etc.)
- The location of the accident and how it happened
Also, be sure not to admit fault (to either the other party or the police), regardless of whether or not you feel like it was your fault. Remember to try and be polite to everyone, as it may affect how things run regarding insurance, etc. in the future.
Third, document everything! Thank goodness for smart phones – you can easily take photos and videos of the damage to both vehicles, and try to be as thorough as possible. If there were witnesses to the accident, be sure to get a statement from them as well as their contact information for future use. They can help you if the other driver tries to dispute your claims.
Fourth, file an accident report with law enforcement. Sometimes the police won’t respond to an accident unless there are injuries, but you should file a state vehicle accident report anyway (you can do it online for convenience). Be sure to do it as soon as possible, and be thorough. If you file the report it may help to expedite the insurance process.
Finally, preparation is everything. We at Toyota of Orlando know you can never predict when an accident might happen, so be prepared! Know what your insurance company covers and what they don’t (like a rental car, or having your car towed, etc.). Know what your deductible is, and the steps to take to file a claim and the process afterwards. Also, you can prepare by having particular things in your car! Make sure you know where your insurance information is, and you may even want to consider having the following things in an “accident” kit in your car:
- Pen and paper for taking notes or exchanging info
- A camera or disposable camera for photo documentation
- A list of emergency contact numbers for emergency personnel
- A list of any medications you’re allergic to for emergency personnel
- A first-aid kit for minor injuries
- A measuring tape for documentation purposes
- A cell phone and a charger, in case your battery is low
- A fire extinguisher
- Warning cones, triangles, or flares to ward off other drivers, especially if it’s dark outside
